Shelter for Science

The Institute for Scintillation Materials of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (ISMA NAS of Ukraine) is a leading scientific and technological center in Kharkiv, Ukraine dedicated to the development of scintillation materials. These are materials that emit flashes of light when exposed to various forms of radiation, such as X-rays, gamma rays, or charged particles. Scientists at ISMA investigate methods and technologies for their manufacture, and the adjustment of production for various technical applications.

During 2022 ISMA, as well as other places in Kharkiv, was suffering from heavy shelling by Russian army. Due to this, some of ISMA equipment was damaged, and some was dismantled and hidden in safe locations. Some experimental samples of scintillators were destroyed and the results were lost. Crystal growth facilities were taken out from the buildings affected by the bombing by Russian warplanes and missiles to safe locations under the surface. Most of the crystal growth equipment is already up and running in the new locations.

A new history of scintillators crystal growth under the surface has begun.
